RCO
Bait Dispensers (see illustration
at left) are hand held units used for the detection and dispersion
of grain baits in particular. Pelleted baits tend to be chewed
up in the tubes of these units. RCO Gopher Probe Bait Gun
is our smaller unit that holds approximately 1/2 lb.of grain
bait. It's commercial brother the RCO Contractor Bait
holds twice the grain quantity as the smaller and has the "feel"
for the tunnel, as does the smaller unit. Typically, in tighter
more compact soils, we suggest using a steel locating rod to
locate the runs. This probing for tunnels is diagrammed on the
tools for user success.
Sample Directions
This product may be used only in manual subterranean
applications in terrestrial food crops and terrestrial non-food
and forestry areas to control pocket gophers Pocket gophers
may be controlled by placing bait in the main runway, after
gaining access by removing plugs in lateral tunnels or by probing
soil to locate the main runway. Reclose hole, taking care to
exclude light and not to allow soil to cover the bait. Make
2 to 5 bait sets per burrow system depending upon its apparent
size. Depending upon gopher density, one pound of bait will
treat one to eight acres.

The
Problem
Gophers are one of the most
damaging
and annoying rodent pests.
A furry, burrowing animal about 6" long, gophers
dig complex tunnel systems and can consume and destroy
large amounts of vegetation. Typically, the gopher cuts
the roots beneath the surface, then pulls the rest of
the plant into the burrow. They are a wary animal and
are often able to avoid or frustrate the devices or schemes
now used to control them. |
The
Answer
Placing poison bait directly
in the gopher's tunnel with a minimum
of disturbance has proven to be the most effective method
of control. Trapping and hand set baiting requires digging
to find the main tunnel which is time consuming, destroys
more plants, disturbs the gopher and makes him harder
to get. Gassing is often ineffective because of the tunnel
complexity. |
The
Gopher Tool
This hand held pointed probe
with built in bait resevoir injects bait directly into
the tunnel. To use, probe 6-8" around the fresh dirt
mounds pushed up by the gopher until the tunnel is found
(indicated by a sudden drop). On sloping
ground the tunnel is usually uphill. If the mound has
a depression on one side the tunnel is usually on the
depression side. Bait is deposited by turning the crank
arm back and forth. Flatten out dirt mounds, and if no
more appear you know the gopher is gone.
A wing nut secured resevoir cap and positive arm lock
are provided to prevent spillage. The tool will inject
grain up to the size of wheat. To deposit approximately
1 teaspoon of bait turn the crank arm back and forth 2
times for milo bait(1/8" dia. round grain) and 3
times for wheat type bait(oblong grain). For suitable
gopher tool bait please refer to the gopher bait information
sheet. |
